Christmas Memories

I love this time of year. There is something magical about this season...miraculous might be a better word. For starters, the reason for the season. Our Lord and Savior was born of a virgin some 2009 years ago. Miraculous. How extraordinary to belong to a God who so powerfully created the earth, parts waters, and so gently brings his own Son into the world to save us.

My parents have always made holidays so special for us. As the holidays arrived, my parents would put us in our pj's, make hot chocolate, and we would ride through town listening to The Polar Express on audio tape. None of us said a word, just listened to the magical story of believing in Santa. We would look at Reynold's Farm Equipment's Christmas light display and see the beautiful lights in neighborhoods.

Each year we celebrated the true meaning of Christmas by reading the Christmas story from the Bible, and then our Santa book on Christmas Eve. The Santa book is one that Mom has read to us (with the same voices) every year, and has the most beautiful pictures of Santa showing an "Brownie" (elf) through his home. The book is magical, has a special smell, and brings out all of the fantasies of Jolly Old Saint Nick right before bedtime.

As a family, we would set out cookies and milk for Santa and the carrots for the reindeer. I would fall asleep to the sounds of carols on the radio, and accounts of Santa's sleigh sightings. We would joyfully awake in our Christmas pj's and were met with a note from Santa at the top of the stairs, thanking us for the delicious cookies and nutritious carrots for his reindeers.

Once given the OK from my parents, we would run down the stairs to meet Santa's gifts in our stockings! OH, what excitement, what anticipation! After weeks of dreaming and hoping that we had been good and that Santa knew what we wanted we finally got to see what he had brought us!

My favorite Santa gift was the "handmade" Barbie houses that Allison and I got. They were 3 stories tall, had wall paper, flooring, and grass on the roofs! We played with those things for years!!!

After stockings, we would enjoy breakfast as a family, and then enter into our all day present opening extravaganza!!!

What are some of your favorite Christmas memories?

I have to agree with you on all the above memories you listed. We had a great childhood with wonderful, creative, and loving memories. Our parents always provided the best traditions, events, and ideas for us to go along with. Your blog was well written and you managed to capture the true events we shared!
